Joel Bird

Joel Bird is a Garden Designer, Artist, Designer/Artist, Sculptor, Author and Musician. 

Joel grew up in Walton and Allerton, Liverpool and attended Calderstones Comprehensive. 

He went on to study at Liverpool John Moores University.


branching out

There is so much Joel has achieved and continues to achieve with his creative flair that he somehow all manages to connect together so well.

Joel as a musician his band Jubjub once went on tour with Elvis Costello. He writes his own music for not only his own albums but for TV, film and theatre. 

As an artist Joel Bird has twice been shortlisted for the Jon Moore's Painting Prize and has had solo shows in Liverpool, London and Philadelphia

In 2014, Joel Bird won Shed of the Year on Amazing Spaces, hosted by George Clarke.

This was the first series of the programme and in 2015 Joel returned as a Shed of the Year Judge.

in 2017 Joel published his first book The Book of Shed: How to create your perfect garden office, room or space.

Joel appeared on Gardeners' World in 2020 talking about his amazing shed this time in Margate and the roof garden was packed full of produce.

In 2021 Joel Bird features in a new type of gardening programme Your Garden Made Perfect which was first shown on BBC2 on 04 February 2021.

Your Garden Made Perfect

Presented by Angela Scanlon as well as Joel Bird it features award-winning garden designers, 
Helen Elks-SmithPip Probert , Tom Massey and Manoj Malde.


On 01 May 2021 a new Garden makeover show started on Channel 4 The Great Garden Revolution and Joel Bird was on familiar turf designing and building the garden structures.

This 4 part series was to feed the new interest in gardening and using the garden as an extra room from Post Covid-19 lockdowns.

The other presenters are Ecological Gardener Poppy Okotcha who designs and plant the soft Landscaping and Craftsman Bruce Kenneth who produces the garden furnishings.


The Great Garden Revolution returns for a second series which was first shown on Saturday 21 May 2022 on Channel 4 sees the debut of Errol Reuben Fernandes replacing Poppy Okotcha.

The 4 part series again featured  Craftsman Bruce Kenneth. 


Joel lives with his partner Sara 2 children Juniper and Finch in Margate, Kent.
