Love Your Garden Series 3

Love Your Garden Series 3

Alan Titchmarsh introduces us to the 3rd series of Love Your Garden which was first aired on 25 June 2013.

Alan is again joined by his trusty team of David DomoneyKatie Rushworth  and Frances Tophill.

Love your Garden has not changed its format since Series 2 with the doorstep surprise and a garden being transformed for someone deserving.

The earlier series were not as long, with this one having just 8 episodes and they were not as big budget as some of the later series, which seemed to include huge garden structures.

There were several memorable episodes in this series and accessibility seemed to be a common theme with several wheelchair users having the transformation they needed to enjoy their garden fully.

There are some clever garden designs featured, some handy tips along the way and sometimes design ideas that you would not want in your own garden!

In this series there is one garden I remember for just being simple, not having a wow factor but just a garden most of us gardeners would like and be proud to own.

It also featured in Love Your English Country Garden as well as Episode 5 of this series and it was for Falkland veteran John Phillips from  Woking Surrey.

A simple small garden design with a Greenhouse, an arbour and somewhere to sit and eat, traditional planting as well as a new place for a revealing statue complete with fig leaf!

Sometimes simple is best and you don't need a Garden Designer or big budget to achieve!

In the first episode of this series the Team help a fellow Gardener who had Motor Neurone Disease which had sadly confined him to a wheelchair.

Malcolm Dean from Hurst Green sadly passed away shortly after the programme first aired.

The family had moved to an adapted bungalow but the garden was not very accessible due to it being sloped and boggy.

The garden makeover involved a lot of hard landscaping to make the site more suitable and included a winding accessible path, seating areas, planting of a flower bed in Watford  FC colours and some play equipment.

The final episode in this series was a bit different as the garden was done in memory of teenager Alice Pyne at her family home in Ulverston in the Lake District.

Alice became famous world wide for her blog and Bucket List she created following her diagnosis and battle with Non Hodgkinson's Lymphoma, Alice sadly passed away on 12 January 2013.

Alice was also encouraging everyone to join the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register and started her own Charity Alice's Escapes to give holidays to people in similar circumstances.

Alan surprises the family and wants to build a garden for them to remember Alice in and also for her friends to come and remember her as well as a place to relax in.

They wanted a natural garden in the large garden plot which already had a huge dry stone wall and a stream separating some of the garden connected by a bridge.

Alan starts his plan to include making use of the wall and adding paving, a rock garden, planting for the shady area and dealing with the odd shape of the garden.

Alan makes his usual visits to local places for inspiration and the family are sent away whilst the transformation takes place.

Before you know it the garden is transformed and the family are shocked by the changes, and this garden did have one of the biggest Rock Garden they have done, not that they are something many people add now!

What most memorable about this garden to me was the area over the stream for the daughter Millie and the huge round wicker pod that spun round to face the sun!

The house was put up for sale a few years later and I often wonder how much is added to the house value for these designed by gardens that appear on Garden makeover shows?
