Toby Buckland

Toby Buckland

Toby Neale Buckland is a Gardener, Author, Radio Presenter and TV Presenter on Gardeners' World.

Toby Buckland was born in Exeter, Devon on 11 October 1969

His Grandfather was a Gardener and his Father was a builder so working outdoors was in the family and early memories include collecting seaweed at the beach with his Uncle for fertilizer for the potatoes.

As a young child he would earn pocket money doing garden work.

Branching out

At 17 Toby went travelling to Israel, Bavaria and then onto America before returning to Devon.

Toby started his gardening career as a Garden Apprentice at Blyth's Devon Nursery,

He went on to study Horticulture at Bicton College in Devon and later on attending Hadlow College of Horticulture and Agriculture in Kent.

From little acorns

Toby started his television career in 1996 as a Researcher working behind the scenes and gaining experience for his time in front of the cameras.

Two years later Toby made his first appearances in front of the camera on programmes like  Home Front in the Garden, Real Wrecks, Carol Vorderman's Better Homes on ITV and BBC1's Garden Magic. (I have been unable to find specific dates and appearances)

In 2008 following Monty Don having a stroke and temporarily leaving Gardeners' World ,Toby Buckland took over as the main presenter.

An unpopular re-vamp of Gardeners' World took place with a new format of a hour long programme and the dumbing down of the show, left some viewers very unhappy with the new format.

Toby described his time on the show as 'his best and worst time' and after 2 years and 3 series,. Toby was axed for a returning Monty Don.

Gardeners' World then went through more changes with Monty presenting the show from his own garden at Longmeadow.

Toby Buckland has spoken about the animosity he felt towards the ending of his time as the main presenter of Gardeners' World in 2010 and it was good to see him return to the programme as a Presenter in 2022.

In 2009, Toby he won the Environmental Award from the Garden Media Guild for a Gardeners' World Special on peat in gardening, this is way before the present day campaign for Peat Free Compost.

Toby Buckland had an Exeter Nursery / garden centre between 2011 - 2017 that he owned but he sold this.

Toby Buckland runs a garden festival,  a very successful 2 day Toby's Garden Festival at Powderham Castle near Exeter, which has run since 2015.

As well as giving talks and Lectures, Toby writes articles for Newspapers and Magazines including The Guardian, Daily Mail, Gardeners' World Magazine and Amateur Gardening.

Toby is a Radio Presenter with a weekly Sunday Morning show on BBC Devon

Toby is married to Lisa Buckland and they have 3 children and currently lives in Dawlish, Devon.
